Introduction

This tastefully converted 1838 Grade II listed Italian style villa, is set within a full acre of terraced gardens, and located in a quiet district close to the heart of the popular resort of Torquay on the English Riviera.

Vomero comprises of five spacious self catering apartments for up to six people. Some apartments have their own private balconies and panoramic views across Torbay.

Vomero has an impressive history, Isambard Kingdom Brunel resided here in 1848 and the Emperor Haille Selassie lived here after Mussolini invaded Ethiopia in the Second World War.

Resident Proprietors John & Angela welcome you to Vomero and are always on hand to assist their guests and if you have any questions regarding access please do call.

Pre-arrival

  • We have an extensive website, with diagrams of the floor / room layouts and pictures of all the rooms
  • Enquiries can be made directly from the website via email; bookings can be made via telephone or by letter
  • The nearest bus stop is at the top of the road 120 metres from the house
  • Torquay coach station is 1 mile away and guests can be collected free of charge by prior arrangement
  • Torquay train station is 1.5 miles away and guests can be collected free of charge by prior arrangement
  • We have a wheelchair and other aides and equipment available, please ask when booking
  • There are two Shopmobility facilities in Torquay and St.Marychurch with car parking available on site
  • Torquay has many public toilets around the Town centre, 5 of which are Radar toilets
  • Two Torquay taxi firms have full wheelchair accessibility
  • We offer a food hamper facility which can be booked prior to guest’s arrival
  • This access statement is available on our website and in the Reception area of the house.

Arrival and car parking Facilities

  • There is ample off road private on site parking and designated disabled parking, the car park is on level ground with level access to the house.
  • Help is available to assist guests with transferring luggage
  • The main entrance to the house is less than 10 metres from the car parking, the entrance is 100cm wide and is reached via a porch area with a 3cm step and a 7cm step at the door. A ramp is available for wheelchair access
  • There is lighting at the house entrance and front car park.

Main Entrance, reception and ticketing area

  • The main entrance to the house is less than 10 metres from the car parking, the door entrance is 100cm wide and is reached via a porch area with a 3cm step and a 7cm step at the door. A ramp is available for wheelchair access
  • There is an intercom system and separate door bell at the door to contact the owners who will then meet the guests at the front door
  • Having entered through the main door there is a local information area which is 230cm x 230cm in size which leads to the main house hallway via a 100cm wide door
  • The information area has many leaflets on local and regional attractions, English Riviera Access For All booklet, bus time tables, eating out guides, maps and beach information.

Public areas - Hall, stairs, landing, corridors etc

  • The main hallway is 230cm wide as is carpeted with a traditional short thread Axminster type carpet
  • The Roma & Venezia Apartments entrance doors lead off from the hallway the doors being 86cm & 90cm wide respectively
  • The stairs leading to the first floor are located on the right side of the hallway. The stairs are carpeted with Axminster short thread carpet and are 17cm high and 150cm wide, the stairs are two tiered with a halfway landing 400cm x 150cm in size, the total number of steps is 24 and there is a substantial hand rail. The Napoli, Vomero and Genova apartments are located on the first floor
  • There is an annex to the right of the hallway, 200cm x 300cm, which leads to a 70cm wide door leading to the stairs to the basement. In this annex you will find an internet ready computer available for all guests. There is also free Wi-Fi throughout the house
  • The basement area which contains a laundry and children’s play zone is reached through a 65cm wide door and 12 stairs which are100cm wide with a drop of 20cm, these stairs do not benefit from a hand rail.

Public WCs

  • Thereis one additional toilet situated on the ground floor which is available for guests to use andis located off the hallway annex with a door width of 60cm, the toilet seat is 45cm high with space of 20cm to the left and 27cm to the right. 

Laundry

  • The laundry is located in the basement and has a laundrette commercial size washing machine and warm air dryer, drying racks and an outside washing line adjacent to the rear car park
  • A service wash is available for guests unable to access the laundry facility.

Leisure facilities

  • The basement has a children’s play zone with a variety of games and books for children of all ages, soft toys, Sony play station 2, table football and full size pool table.

Outdoor facilities

  • There are an acre of terraced gardens to explore, with a stone barbecue area, wooden tables and chairs, sun loungers and a selection of garden games and sports equipment.

Bedrooms and sleeping areas 

  • Roma apartment located on the ground floor:- Entrance door is 86cm wide which leads into spacious living room with comfortable and firm 2 seater settee, dinning table with chairs TV/DVD/freeview and radio/cd player. The bedroom door is 70cm wide, has a standard size double bed, with quality mattress, non feather pillows and duvets. There is not sufficient room for a wheelchair to move around the room.   • Venezia apartment located on the ground floor:- Entrance door is 90cm wide leading into a spacious living room with 4 comfy firm armchairs, dinning table with chairs, TV/DVD/freeview and radio/cd player, and a standard size double bed, with quality mattress, non feather pillows and duvets. There is plenty of room for wheelchair access. The twin bedroom door is 56cm wide, has two  single beds with a gap between beds of 58cm, with quality mattress, non feather pillows and duvets. The single beds can be stacked to create one bed providing additional space. Please see attached room plans.
  • Napoli apartment located on the first floor:- Entrance door is 150cm wide leading to hallway with a width of 90cm which then leads to a very spacious living area via an 80cm wide door, kitchen and dinning area. The living room has a large bed settee and 3 comfy firm armchairs, there is a dinning table and 6 chairs, TV/DVD/freeview and radio/cd player. There is also a balcony accessed through 120cm doors with a 10cm step. The double bedroom door is 80cm wide, has a standard size double bed, with quality mattress, non feather pillows and duvets. The twin bedroom door is 80cm wide, has two standard single beds with sufficient room for a further bed if required, all with quality mattress, non feather pillows and duvets.   • Vomero apartment located on the first floor:- Entrance door is 90cm wide leading to a very spacious living room with 2 comfy firm armchairs, dinning table with chairs, TV/DVD/freeview and radio/cd player, and a standard size double bed, with quality mattress, non feather pillows and duvets. The dressing room door is 70cm wide. There is a 100cm door leading with a 6cm step to a large balcony. Please see attached room plans.
  • Genova apartment located on the first floor:- Entrance door is 80cm wide leading to hallway with a width of 90cm which then leads to a very spacious living area via an 80cm wide door, kitchen and dinning area. The living room has a 3 seater and 2 seater sofa, there is a dinning table with seating for 6, TV/DVD/freeview and radio/cd player,  There is also a balcony accessed through 120cm doors with a 10cm step. The double bedroom door is 80cm wide, has a standard size double bed, with quality mattress, non feather pillows and duvets. The twin bedroom is accessed through a 90cm wide door and has two standard single beds which can be joined to form a super king size bed, with quality mattresses non feather pillows and duvets. The  Children's twin room has a 80cm wide door and is equipped with two 2' 6" single beds with quality mattresses and non feather pillows and duvets. Please see attached room plans.  

Bathroom, shower-room and WC

  • Roma apartment:- The toilet and shower room is reached through a 52cm wide sliding door, the shower has a step of 23cm, folding door is 60cm wide and shower cubicle is 80cm x 80cm. The toilet seat is 44cm high with space of 26cm to the left and 12cm to the right.
  • Venezia apartment:- The toilet and shower room is reached through a 74cm wide door, the shower has a step of 10cm, and is a 90cm x 90cm quadrant shower cubicle. There is a sink which is 80cm tall, the toilet seat is 44cm high, raised toilet seat available, with space of 20cm to the left and 20cm to the right.
  • Napoli apartment:- There are two toilets and shower rooms each leading from the bedrooms. The double bedroom has a toilet entrance door 58cm wide the shower has a step of 22cm, folding door is 72cm wide and shower cubicle is 80cm x 86cm. The toilet seat is 44cm high with space of 22cm to the left and 30cm to the right. The twin bedroom has a toilet entrance door 52cm wide the shower has a step of 25cm, folding door is 72cm wide and shower cubicle is 86cm x 86cm. The toilet seat is 44cm high with space of 34cm to the left and 20cm to the right.
  • Vomero apartment:- the toilet and shower room is reached through a 60cm wide door, the shower has a step of 15cm, it has a shower door entrance is 70cm and the shower cubicle is 90cm x 80cm. The toilet seat is 44cm high with space of 18cm to the left and 36cm to the right.
  • Genova apartment:- There are two toilets and shower room, the first is entered from the main corridor,  the toilet and shower room is reached through a 56cm wide door, the shower has a step of 10cm, the shower is a 90cm x 90cm quadrant shower cubicle. The toilet seat is 44cm high with space of 38cm to the left and 15cm to the right. The second toilet is located off the twin bedroom, the toilet and shower room is reached through a 60cm wide door with a 10cm step, the shower has a step of 15cm , it has a shower curtain entrance and the shower cubicle is 75cm x 75cm. The toilet seat is 42cm high with space of 23cm to the left and 25cm to the right. 

Grounds and gardens

  • The acre of garden is terraced providing 3 separate flat grassed areas separated by flower borders, shrubs and mature trees
  • There are two access points to the gardens. One is via 3 sets of stone steps the other via a short concrete ramp and then a long sloping gravel path. The slope and path are wide enough for a wheel chair but care must be taken due to severity of slope on the gravel path
  • The lower grassed area is ideal for games and some sports equipment is provided, e.g. croquette, badminton, bat and ball sets, soft balls
  • There are sets of wooden tables and chairs and sun loungers throughout the gardens all with seat cushions
  • There are 2 small shallow ponds on the lower grassed area which are fenced.

  • Mobility aids available free of charge including, wheelchair, raised toilet seat, shower seat, bed/chair table, tap levers
  • We can only accept aid assistance dogs in Venezia and Verona apartments, we provide a dog kit bag containing bowls, tin opener, mat
  • We have available a toaster for sole use by Coeliac sufferers 
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout the house and Guest internet computer in hallway annex
  • No Smoking policy in all rooms
  • Free pick up and drop off at local rail and coach station
